Google Docs

What This Does

Google Docs has a built-in "Help me write" AI feature (powered by Gemini) that drafts, rewrites, and expands text directly inside your document — useful for drafting credit memo sections, borrower letters, and loan committee narratives without leaving Google Docs.

Before You Start

  • You have a Google account and Google Docs open (no paid plan required for basic "Help me write")
  • For the full Gemini experience in Docs, you need a Google Workspace Business or Gemini add-on subscription
  • You have your deal data ready (borrower info, loan terms, financial highlights)

Steps

1. Find the AI feature

Open a new or existing Google Doc. Click anywhere in the document. You'll see a small pencil/sparkle icon appear in the left margin — click it. Alternatively, go to Insert → Help me write from the top menu.

2. Describe what you need

A prompt box appears. Type a specific description of what you want written — don't write the content yourself, just describe it:

"Write a 2-paragraph management assessment for a commercial loan credit memo. The business owner is Maria Gutierrez, a licensed CPA with 16 years of experience in commercial printing. She founded the company 11 years ago and has successfully navigated two economic downturns. She holds all key customer relationships."

Press Enter to generate.

3. Review and insert

Google Docs shows a preview of the generated text. Click Insert to add it to your document. Then select any weak sentences and click the sparkle icon again to "Refine" that specific section with follow-up instructions like "Make this more concise" or "Add a note about key person dependency risk."

Real Example

Scenario: You need to write the "Purpose and Use of Proceeds" section for a $750K term loan to a landscaping company buying two new vehicles and mowing equipment.

What you type: "Write a clear, concise 'Purpose and Use of Proceeds' section for a commercial loan credit memo. Borrower: Green Fields Landscaping LLC, requesting $750K 5-year term loan to purchase 2 commercial trucks ($180K each) and 3 zero-turn mowers ($130K each). Equipment supports 4 new HOA contracts awarded for 2025 season."

What you get: A 2-3 sentence professional purpose section that connects the loan request to the business opportunity — suitable for direct insertion into the credit memo.

Tips

  • Use "Help me write" for narrative sections; fill in numbers yourself — AI is better at prose than arithmetic.
  • If you don't have a paid Google Workspace plan, the free "Help me write" feature is still available with a Google account — it just has usage limits.
  • For longer memos, work section by section rather than asking AI to write the whole memo at once — section-by-section gives better results and easier review.
